Our Mission & Vision

What we believe:

At the Oroville Free Methodist Church we desire to be a Church family that is intentional about seeking God thru His Word and loving those in our community. We strive to be intergenerational and we want to love people where they are right now. All people have great value to our Father and we want to live out His call given to us in Luke 10:27.

Our teaching is an expository style where we start with verse 1 of a book of the Bible and work our way to the end of the book. We teach both the Old Testament and the New Testament with the desire that the Holy Spirit would change each of our hearts and thus change us as we obey His Word.

There are a variety of interpretations of Scripture even within the Body of Christ. Thus, at some point, we will encounter theological differences among Christians who connect to us. When this happens, we fully embrace the axiom:  In essentials, unity (Ephesians 4:4-6); in non-essentials, liberty (Romans 14); in all things, charity (1 Corinthians 13:2).

The Trinity

There is but one living and true God, the maker and preserver of all things. And in the unity of this Godhead there are three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are one in eternity, deity, and purpose; everlasting, of infinite power, wisdom, and goodness. (Genesis 1:1, 26-27; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; John 10:30; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14)

God the Father

God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He exists in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. These three are equal and are one God. (Genesis 1:1; Exodus 3:13-15; Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; John 1:1-3; 5:19-23; 8:58; 14:9-11; 15:26; 16:13-15; 2 Corinthians 13:14)

God the Son

We believe that Jesus Christ is truly the only begotten Son of God, whose death and bodily resurrection provide forgiveness from sin and eternal life. His indwelling presence through the Holy Spirit gives power and purpose to our living. (Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-15; 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14-15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13)

God the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. This immersion into Spirit-led living provides the Christian with the power to live a fruitful, victorious life, understanding of spiritual truth, and boldness in sharing the good news with others. He also gives us spiritual gifts. As Christians, we seek to live under His daily control. (2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13; 14:16-17; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12; 3:16; Ephesians 1:13; Galatians 5:25)

The Bible

We hold the Bible to be the inspired Word of God. We hold that “All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. (1 Thes. 2:13, 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Psalm 12:6; 119:105, 160; Proverbs 30:5)

Human Beings

People are made in the image of God and are the supreme object of God’s creation. Although every person has God created potential for good, all of us have been corrupted by disobedience toward God, called sin. (Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 43:4a; 53:6a; 59:1-21; Romans 3:23)

Salvation

Salvation is God’s free gift to us, but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by accepting Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin’s penalty. (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-10; John 1:12; 14:6; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1)

The Holy Sacraments

Baptism is administered to believers as a declaration of their faith in Jesus as Savior; telling the world we are truly His followers (Matthew 10:32). Baptism doesn’t make you a believer; it shows that you already are one. The act of baptism isn’t what saves you. Only faith in Christ does that (Ephesians 2:8-9). Baptism is symbolic – an outward act of an inward spiritual change that has already taken place.

Communion – Jesus asked His disciples to remember His death and resurrection (1 Corinthians 11:23-26), which we do in public worship once a month. It is a personal time of reflection as we celebrate the Gift that Jesus has provided for us.

Church

We believe the church is the world-wide body of Christ. It is comprised of all believers who have been united through the sacrifice of Jesus. God has also called these believers to be part of a local church family. (Matthew 16:18; Hebrews 12:22-24)

Eternity

People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. Heaven and hell are real places of eternal existence. To be eternally separated from God is hell. To be eternally in relationship with Him is eternal life. (John 3:16; 12:25; 14:2-3; 17:3; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15)
